an idea i had for helping tommie learn measuring to the 8th's on a ruler was to use a few homemade worksheets with a variety of measurements... then take spaghetti noodles and break them to the length! oh, this was so much fun...and hand's on...and successful.
our read aloud is, Brighty, of the Grand Canyon, by Marguerite Henry! we're just loving it! just a whole lot of information about the grand canyon...flora, fauna, geology, and rich vocabulary...and we're only on chapter 3!
we also learned about fermenting and exhaust systems, so far this week.

  1. We read Brighty last year. It was one of our Five in a Row bookclub books that was mailed to us.

  2. I love Marguerite Henry. Read all her books when I was a kid. We are reading The Great Brain by John D. Fitzgerald. Another I read as a kid, but I'm not enjoying it that much this time around. The kids seem to like it. Maybe we'll do a Henry book after it.

  3. Oh we LOVED Brighty so much!!! That was our big summer read aloud last year. We also watched the movie (got it from NETFLIX) after reading the book ~ of course, the movie wasn't near as good as the book, but it was an enjoyable family movie night..if anything it was just good to see the Grand Canyon views! I hope that you continue enjoying it. I've never been to the Grand Canyon ~ have you?

Right now we are reading the Journeyman and enjoying it so much. So interesting to read about painter journeymen in New England.

    Happy Reading!
